Friday Night's Alright For Finals

Camden Beach Sports season has finished with a bang this year, with over 150 people attending the Grand Finals at Camden Sports Club last Friday night. It was an unprecedented showcase of almost all the sports on offer on the sand (Touch Footy season continues after Christmas).
To start the night off, Swifts played against Dynamite Diamonds in the final of the newest sport, Mixed Beach Netball. Dynamite Diamonds, a team of junior girls from the Camden Netball Association were overpowered in the end by the more senior Swifts team. The Swifts combination of senior netball players, basketballers and rugby league players proved a formidable force winning the final 39 - 13. Congratulations to Mitchell Parnell, Nick Crouch, Nic Geist, Shanaye Faber, Natasha Howe, Matt Thornton, Holly Mathews, Todd Pes and Bronny Jones on a fantastic first season.
Second up were the Beach Volleyball finals and with all 3 matches being played at the same time, there was plenty of great volleyball to watch. This season 18 teams battled it out across 3 divisions, making volleyball the most popular sport of the year. The Men's final was a contest between the Quick Flip Guns, a combination of guys from 3 division 1 mixed teams, and Double Benetration, a team returning to the competition after a year off following a win as the Rockstars in the mixed comp in 2009. Although playing 3 players on 4, Double Benetration were victorious in the end, 2 sets to 1. Division 1 Mixed was a contest between the Flip Flops and defending champions Sandpit Warriors. The Warriors like the men were a player short, however this time it proved costly and the champions were defeated 2 sets to 1. Division 2 Mixed was played between Sand Blasters and G-Bangers. It was a great season from the Sand Blasters, who had 2 first time players in their side. G-Bangers were just too strong in the final however winning 3 set to 0. Thankyou to Karl Palin and Matt Weatherburn for umpiring 2 of the finals matches on the night.
As the sun began to set, it was time to turn on the lights and let the Beach Soccer players do battle. Over 80 people surrounded the sand for the Mixed Soccer Grand Final, contested between RMT and Donaven. With 3 first half goals Donaven seemed in control of the match, but after conceding a penalty in their own half they let RMT into the game with striker Jasmine Haines finishing off a shot by Megan Simpson to get their team within 1 goal of the opposition. The final 5 minutes were very tight, with the crowd hanging on every shot. In the end Donaven managed to hold onto the game 4 - 3.
It was getting late and the BBQ was just about out of gas, but there was still the Men's Soccer final to go. Wii Not Fit were attempting to win their 3rd consecutive title, but 6-on-tha-Beach stood in their way. 6-on-tha-Beach have been unlucky the past 2 seasons, losing in the semi-finals both times to the Raging Fats. They made the most of their first grand final appearance by taking an early lead. Wii Not Fit can never be written off, as only 3 weeks prior, with only 5 minutes to play, they came from 4 goals down to win a match against Debbie FC. The second half became very intense and Wii Not Fit were never going to give up. At the final whistle it was 6-on-tha-Beach who had just managed to hold out the previous champions 7 - 6.
I would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support of Beach Sports at the Camden Sports Club, and hope we an continue to grow in number in 2011.
A huge THANKYOU to all the local businesses who helped provide prizes for all the winners in 2010, as well as the sponsors of our players t-shirts which were introduced this year.
New competitions will begin in Feb 2011. Numbers across all sports are limited so if you want to enter a team for next year please contact Ben - 0404 439 170 as early as possible in the new year.

HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR

-Ben
